This Do It Yourself Brick Grill Rocks! And You Can Build One Too.
Let's talk about the grill
This open face grill is simple to construct and operate. Perfect bricks are not necessary for it to deliver awesome barbecue. For our construction, we need the following:
10 concrete blocks
56 standard red bricks (3 5/8 in x 2 1/4 in x 7 5/8 in)
20 white fire bricks (9 in x 4 in x 2 in)
grill grate
For our design, we want to place two of the concrete block front to back, another between the back block, and last two more front to back on the other side of the back block. Simple. We then could stack the second row right on to of the first but if you want the pattern, you will need to use half blocks to stagger them. After you have set the secton row, we want to stack six rows of the standard size red bricks on the inner edge of the block. On the fifth row, we need to turn four bricks inward to hold our grate. Place the sixth row in place to hold the grill grate bricks in place. Last, we trim the entire grill with the fire brick really just for style. We are not taking advantage of the firebrick's heat retaining properties. Round the edges and the top with the white firebrick. Place your grill grate in place and you are ready to rock.
Take another look at our video about to understand how to cook with this grill. It is best not to pile in wood above the first row unless you will be standing over your cook to ensure it doesn't burn. Meats that require longer cook time to ensure they are cooked all the way throught should be placed on the rack with the wood piled only up to the top of the first row of block.
It's an easy grill to use and provides a great visual for friends and family to sit around. Be sure to check on your fire from time to time during long cooks to ensure it does not burn down completely. Another thing to note is that the fire tends to be hotter in the back verses the front. This is convenient when you need to take items that are either cooking too fast or have finished cooking. All you have to do is move them to the front of the grill grate. That being said, if you pile too much wood in the opening of the grill, there will be no where on the grill grate that is cooler and caution should be taken when approaching the grill due to the heat at the opening.
Below, we have included a sequence of images to help you visualize the construction of this grill. Try your hand at building one of these. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
