Of all the supreme court cases and supreme court decisions, the recent supreme court ruling regarding President Donald J. Trump may be the most controversial in American history.
Somehow after a number of states (Colorado, Illinois, and Main) attempted to keep Mr. Trump off of the 2024 GOP ballot, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) determined that Colorado could not remove him even though their interpretation of the law clearly indicated that President Trump had participated in the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol building.
The sad part is that several other states arrived at the same conclusion as. Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, a Democrat, disqualified Mr. Trump from the primary ballot in Maine. Circuit Court Judge Tracie Porter if Illinois ruled that President Trump should be removed from the ballot. And so did the Colorado Supreme Court ... but it didn't matter. The US supreme court justices made it clear that President Trump is still eligible to run.
It's enough to really make you start wondering.... why even have state legislators if their rulings are just going to be tossed in the garbage? Or, better yet, how could their be this much difference in opinion regarding the interpretation of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution? There just really aren't enough words in the amendment to debate its meaning. Seriously, Mr. Trump either engaged in activities that were not acceptable for a person who serves as the Commander and Chief of The United States or he didn't. How could there be this much debate over whether he is eligible or not? And what if he did participate in insurrection activities and the American people still want him on the ballot? What do we do then? Well, this is the kind of debate that sets the stage for people to begin to see that there are two sets of laws. The law appears to be interpreted differently depending on who it is being applied to and the situation. In this one, it appears that Mr. Trump's popularity and dominance of the 2024 GOP made it impossible for SCOTUS to interpret that law in a manner that went against the will of the people. So, if the will of the people is not in line with the law.... will SCOTUS always bend the rules? Maybe they will just interpret the rules differently. Whatever's convenient.
